Eating like the locals – a Khmer breakfast

June 13, 2015 by Sam Walker Leave a Comment

Rice soup, sometimes called rice porridge, is the Joker’s new breakfast of choice. It’s quite a change for someone who rarely ate breakfast and when he did, his preference was for a hearty English-style big breakfast of bacon, eggs, tomatoes, sausages and toast.

For 3000 riel, or 75 cents, he is finding the rice soup, served with meat, a cheap and hearty start to the day that keeps him going through to the afternoon. He particularly enjoys it with one of the sweet baked breads that are available.

This was this morning’s serve of rice soup.

It’s a bit big for me early in the morning and I haven’t been able to do it on really hot mornings. But I’m rather fond of the bai sach chrouk – rice with pork.

Unfortunately the lovely ladies who run the restaurant and cook these fabulous breakfasts don’t speak very much English, so I am yet to learn more about these dishes. The pork in the bai sach chrouk, tastes like a honey barbecue pork and is quite delicious. It comes with a serve of pickled vegies and a dipping sauce and a small bowl of broth.

They are obviously good at what they do because there is a constant stream of people in there for breakfast every morning. It’s a good sign when the locals dine there.

Stay tuned for a more detailed explanation about these simple local breakfast meals.
