Monkeys doing a tightrope performance across the power lines is not a sight we expected to see in the heart of Phnom Penh.
It was a fleeting visit to the capital city and while we have seen monkeys in other parts of the country – mostly surrounded by some kind of bush – we did not expect to see them here.
These guys were across the road from the Children’s Hospital early in the morning.
Have you had any unexpected encounters in your travels?
Fairlie says
Wow! That is a really incredible sight. I wonder where they are going to and from?
I know it’s not at all unexpected…and for northern hemisphere people it’s a ho-hum sight…but we’ve been beside ourselves with excitement seeing squirrels running around European and US cities. They just seemed like cartoon characters to us!

Oh Fairlie, I would be excited too. Such gorgeous creatures and a novelty when they are not a familiar animal.
I have no idea where the monkeys were going to and from. There are a few trees in town but nothing that looked like it would be home to this lot. I guess they have adapted to city life just like people do…
Alyssa says
Wow! Are they often found right in the city? We are headed to the UK in December, however I doubt that we will see any monkeys there haha!

Hi Alyssa. I’m not sure about the monkeys. I’ve never seen them in the city before but they certainly looked at home there. You might not see many monkeys in the UK but you could see squirrels. That would be pretty cool. Enjoy your trip.
Fabiola says
That’s fun!! The other my son and I ran into a grazing flock of sheep on the way home from school, but certainly don’t compare to monkeys!
Sam Walker says
Yes Fabiola, we were surprised to see the monkeys in the city as well. Quite a novelty for us.
